Oats is an annual herbage plant of the family Gramineae which is undemanding to soil and climatic conditions.
Oats is the main fodder-grain crop in Russia. Oats grain is used to produce cereals, flour, oat flour, oatmeal and coffee. Oat groats among other types of cereals takes one of the first places according to nutritional content. Oat flour is used in confectionery, for baking pancakes, etc. flattened grain oats are the main component of muesli. Due to good digestibility, oats is also important in the diet and baby foods.
Grain oats are used as raw material for the production of fodder and as a concentrated animal feed. Oats is cultivated for green fodder, either in pure form or as a mixture with legumes, often with vetch, peas and vetchling. Oat straw is used as coarse fodder and as raw material for the animal feed industry.
The pharmaceutical industry produces alcohol tincture of oats which is an effective sedative. Oats is used in folk medicine, and also in homeopathy.
